Six Sigma and PSP

PSP provides an excellent foundation for the application of the six sigma toolkit to software engineering. PSP and Six Sigma are complementary technologies.  PSP provides a stable process, a state of the art metrics framework, and establishes the basic premise that each individual engineer can benefit from metrics driven continuous improvement.  PSP has all the basic features necessary to support the use of Six Sigma techniques for continuous improvement right “out of the box”, but it lacks analysis tools and systematic process control techniques.  Six Sigma provides the quantitative analysis tools necessary to identify high leverage activities, evaluate the effectiveness of process changes, quantify cost and benefits, and control process performance to targeted levels.  When combined they exhibit a very high degree of synergy.

We offer a three-day course, Six Sigma for PSP that augments the standard PSP course with additional training on how to use six sigma techniques in conjunction with PSP metric data.  We recommend running the course in series with the PSP for Engineers training in order to allow the students to practice some of the Six Sigma techniques when preparing their final report for the PSP for Engineers class.
